Iona Writing Pilgrimage

Last month, I was fortunate to be able to go to the Rock Retreat Writers Conference which was held in Iona. This was a dream come true because I have always wanted to visit the Scottish island. Add to that the opportunity to be with writers and illustrators of children’s and YA books, it was a match made in heaven.

The conference was facilitated by Sarah Odedina, Victoria Wells Arms, Ken Wilson Max and Eleanor Taylor. We had ample time to do writing exercises and learn about craft and industry matters. This was interspersed with hearty meals made by the staff at Bishop’s House and relaxing times just to connect with other participants.

It rained a fair bit but it was not gloomy. Rather it felt like the rain drew out the spiritual atmosphere on the island which has always fascinated me with its Celtic roots. Speaking of Celtic heritage, I had the privilege of climbing up the hill where Columba is said to have written. I had a moment where I was just taking it all in and looked up to see a double rainbow. And that sums up my writing pilgrimage to Iona – unexpected, surreal and deeply rewarding.
